Reality TV? I Dont Think so!
Here in the UK we have a deluge of `reality` TV programs on our television 24/7.
But how real are any of these programs?
I would suggest that as these programs chase the ratings for this ever expanding product, they are looking at more and more ways to shock the audience, and getting further and further away from reality.
First of all there is the choice of participant on these shows. If you are not a fascist fixated, sex obsessed, transsexual, one eyed dwarf then dont bother trying to get on one of these shows!
They want people who are completely over the top exhibitionists whose seemingly only point of reference and interest is themselves.
A more self obsessed bunch of people you couldnt find anywhere.
But is the best we can do in the 21st century, and is it what we really want to see clogging up our screens? I think not. The people in the shows are invariably set up so that they will explode at some point or other during the program, the producers know exactly what buttons to press to get a reaction from these sacrificial lambs.
Of course there is no thought as to how they will live with the consequences of their actions when they are back in the outside world. In the UK Big Brother is the worst offender of this ilk, along with its `sister` show, Celebrity Big Brother. What I would like to see, if we do have to have these programs, is for some real people to be involved, people who can listen and think for themselves, people with interests, fully rounded human beings.
