Making A Will

By Des Ingham

If you are making a Will it is important to be prepared before your visit from your consultant so that you make the right decisions. There are a few things to think of.

For instance, you need to think most importantly who you wish to leave the bulk, if not all, of your estate to. This is normally your spouse/partner, or children, if you have them, but it does not have to be.

You also need to think if there are any people you want to leave certain items to. For example there might be a bracelet that you would like to leave to your niece, or a table that you want to leave to your best friend. Make sure you express these wishes in the legacy section of your Will.

You need to think who you want to leave as Executors to your Will. Most people have between 1 and 4 Executors, with 4 being possibly a bit unwieldy and unmanageable, and 1 being less than wise. People normally leave one of their closest family to be at least one of the Executors. The main thing is that you name people that you feel will carry out the directives in your Will to your satisfaction. In short people you can trust implicitly.

You also need to consider whether you wish to give Lasting Power of Attorney to anyone, in case you become mentally incapable of looking after your own affairs before your death. Your attorney, or attorneys, can then act on your behalf and keep all your property and financial affairs in order for you.
