G20 Summit
By Des Ingham
The G20 Summit recently took place in London, and as usual there was a fair share of rioting and skirmishes with the police going on as the protesters voiced their disapprovalof the world order, and especially the banking system. Surely these sort of protests should be dealt with better by now? The police seem to go in too heavy handed on these occasions, indeed the police were right in the middle of them at one point, which only seemed to exacerbate the situation. The batons always come out at the first small hint of provocation and then all hell lets loose. One person was hit by a baton and later died of a heart attack, and unfortuanately he was not even attending the protest but walking home, and he ended up getting stuck in the middle of it. Of course there will always be some problems at these type of events. There are a certain amount of anarchists who will do everything in their power to provoke and cause trouble. But I think overall a softer approach with the vast majority of the protesters would benefit everybody. As always the actual details of the G20 Summit and the resolutions they were making were hardly reported as the press had a field day with the trouble outside. Lets hope for a more measured approach next time around. |
