Footballs new world order
By Des Ingham
There is a new world order in football, are soccer as our transatlantic cousins quaintly call it, and the new world order is strictly English. The Premiership has now become a huge global phenomenon, and couple this with the billions that the TV companies are pumping into the English league it is no surprise that they are currently pulling away from the rest. Premiership teams had 3 out of the 4 semi finalists in the Champions league last season, and it is highly likely that this will be the case this time around with 4 of the teams in the quarter finals. Unfortunately, due to the earning power of Premiership teams in the Champions League, it is always the same 4 teams which dominate, namely Man Utd, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal. Italian football is dull and sterile, and has been riven by corruption in recent years, and although Spanish football is probably more aesthetically pleasing and technically superior to the English Premiership, it does not have the dynamism and pure thrills of it. It is this excitement and physical nature that makes the Premiership a hit from Iceland to Thailand and all points in between. The 3 Premiership teams blew away the 3 Italian teams they played in the last 16 through the sheer power and breakneck speed of their football, while Liverpool simply obliterated Real Madrid. These things go in cycles but at the moment the cycle shows no sign of breaking and it could be some time before the Italians, Spanish and Germans catch up. |
