20-20 Cricket, A Good Or A Bad Thing?

20-20 cricket has taken off in spectacular fashion in all the cricket playing nations of the world, but will it turn out to be a good or bad thing for the game as a whole?

There are certainly a number of arguments on both sides.

Looking at the positives that 20-20 cricket has brought to the game it cannot be denied that it has proven hugely popular.
Most 20-20 games around the world have been played in front of sell out crowds, it has brought people to cricket grounds that would not normally be seen, and certainly it has caught on with the younger elements.

A 20-20 cricket game lasts around 3 hours at most, unlike a 50 over game (7 hours)or a test match (5 days!), and so is a lot more easy to fit into our busy schedules.

There is more excitement packed into 20-20, with the emphasis on action and big hitting batters. It is very much a speeded up version of the game.

Money has poured into the game since the advent of 20-20 with sponsors and TV companies all wanting to get a piece of the action. Cricket has suddenly become big business.

So what are the downsides to 20-20?

The traditionalists are up in arms, saying it is not really cricket, but more a glorified baseball game.

20-20 is very much bish-bosh, without any of the subtleties of the game, or the tactical nous required in the longer versions.

Everything is loaded in the batters favor to please the crowd, who have become more raucous and unruly at times.

Players techniques can suffer when playing 20-20 and they forget their defensive techniques in favor of going for risky big hits.

And clubs will only start taking on players who are adept at 20-20 at the expense of less expansive players.

Will this be the death knell for test cricket?

I for one do not think so, 20-20 has given cricket a badly needed shot in the arm, both financially and publically, and I do not see why in time that all forms of the game cannot co-exist.
